CHILECITO, Argentina – Carlos Sainz of Spain won Wednesday’s fourth stage of the Dakar Rally and moved into first place in the overall standings in the car division.
Sainz finished the stage 6:04 ahead of 11-time champion Stephane Peterhansel of France and 8:58 in front of Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar. Sainz leads fellow Spaniard Nani Roma by 2:06 in the overall standings. Peterhansel is 18:10 behind in fifth place.
In bikes, Juan Pedrero of Spain won the stage, 29 seconds ahead of Francisco Lopez of Chile and with a 3:10 advantage on fellow Spaniard Marc Coma. Joan Barreda Bort of Spain kept the overall lead. Coma is 3:10 behind, and Lopez is 5:12 off the pace.
Thursday’s stage goes north from Chilecito to Tucuman. The rally finishes Jan. 18 in Valapariso, Chile.
