A joint operation with CIA and Mossad agents reportedly helped trigger a car bomb that killed a senior Hezbollah official in 2008.
The Washington Post report details the involvement of U.S. agents in the killing of Imad Mughniyah in Damascus. The newspaper reported that the U.S. obtained legal authority to carry out the attack on Mughniyah because it was able to prove that he was a threat to Americans.
The United State helped build the bomb that was placed on the back of an SUV. The device was triggered remotely by Mossad agents, but it was the U.S. who reportedly planned the attack.
U.S. officials told the paper that Mughniyah was training Shiite rebels in Iraq that were targeting U.S. forces during the time.
One official told the paper that the Israelis wanted to pull off the attack as “revenge.”
Prior to his death, Mughniyah was considered to be one of the most dangerous terrorists in the world. He was accused of plotting five different attacks on the U.S. and Israel, including the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 in 1985, the kidnapping of Col. William Higgins in 1988 and the 1992 suicide bombing of an Israeli Embassy in Argentina, among other plots.
